Frequently asked questions
Which metadata can this viewer show?
Everything readable without uploading the file: EXIF fields (camera make and model, lens, exposure settings, date and time), GPS coordinates with a one-click map link, XMP fields added by editing software, and IPTC captions or copyright entries. Fields are listed in a simple table, one row per tag.
Is my photo uploaded when I view its metadata?
No. The file is read by JavaScript running in your browser tab — the bytes stay in your device's memory. The inspection works fully offline. The only external request happens if you click the map link for GPS coordinates, which opens Google Maps in a new tab.
Why does some photo show little or no metadata?
Most likely the photo already went through a platform that strips it. Facebook, Instagram and most major social networks delete nearly all EXIF data on upload. Screenshots, some messaging apps and repeated re-saving can also leave a file metadata-free. No metadata shown usually means good news.
Can I view EXIF of iPhone HEIC photos?
Not yet — HEIC support is on the roadmap. Export the photo to JPEG from the Photos app (Share → Save to Files, or use any converter) and inspect the JPEG here.
