What is EXIF data?
EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) is metadata your camera or phone embeds inside every photo: the date and time it was taken, the camera and lens model, exposure settings, sometimes a serial number — and, on phones, exact GPS coordinates. Social networks usually strip it when you post, but email, messaging apps, cloud links and direct file sharing do not.
Are my photos really never uploaded?
No. ScrubExif is a static web page — the cleaning code runs in your browser's own memory. Your photos stay on your device the entire time; you can even go offline after the page loads and it keeps working. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged.
Will removing metadata lower my image quality?
No. The tool edits the file at the container level and never re-encodes pixels. Resolution, colors and compression stay exactly as they were — only the metadata blocks are cut out, which usually makes the file a little smaller.
Which formats are supported?
JPEG/JPG, PNG and WebP — together these cover nearly all photos shared on the web and on phones. HEIC (iPhone native) support is on the roadmap; for now, export HEIC to JPEG first.
What's the difference between removing and hiding metadata?
Many apps only blank out fields or simply not display them — the data can still be recovered with other tools. ScrubExif rewrites the file at the binary level so metadata blocks are physically gone, not just hidden.
